Been away for awhile? Check out old newsletters in the Archive !
***********December 6, 2004***********

Yeah! It’s here… What you ask? The new Green Cove web newsletter! What does that mean for you? We are going to try to post a new entry every couple of weeks or more so you can keep up with what is going on in Green Cove World. Since this is the first newsletter, make sure your friends know to check it out!

In addition to news about what is going on here in Tuxedo I would like to put up some “News Notes”. News Notes will be news about campers, counselors, alumni, etc. The catch is that in order to put up News Notes I will need the info and that is where you come in. Let us know what you are up to. (Since this is on the web, I’ll be careful not to give addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc.) So, give us some feedback and/or news to include about you and your GC friends. We’d love to hear from you…email us!

Hurricane Season

Hurricane Season hit hard in Tuxedo! Frances came through first with her rain followed by Ivan with his wind. Frances brought in so much rain that Green Cove looked like a different place! We got something like 10” in 24 hours. The peninsula on the cold side was totally covered! Lakeside was totally flooded with water up to the beds. The lower level of the Mondamin tower was underwater too.

Ivan came with much less rain but strong winds…more wind than we almost ever get in the mountains. It was almost hurricane strength and we lost quite a few trees. We lost power and water for a few days. There were probably 30-40 trees down in the Back 40. One big oak in front of Junior Line fell and we had to cut another one that was pretty damaged. We are going to plant some new oaks to replace them before summer gets here.

Sorry…no pics from Green Cove during the hurricanes...

Draining the Lake

The water is disappearing! About every 4 or 5 years they drain the lake so people can repair docks, seawalls, beaches etc. It looks pretty different around here, especially since the lake was so high just a few months ago! The lake is down just over 15’ now. The cold side at Green Cove is pretty much empty and the warm/beach side is just a little stream.

Check out the cold side and beach! Liddell in red and my shadow.

I even found an RC left from a Coke Dive!

Check out the Canoe Docks!

The Little Ring

You riders may be interested in knowing what is going on at the barn. One of the tall sides of the Little Ring has been taken out! Yeah! It is going to look really good and keep it from feeling so closed in. It is interesting to see how much bigger the little ring feels with the wall shortened! Here are some pics:

Other News

We have been doing lots of traveling over the last two months! So far we’ve been to New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Shreveport, Alexandria, Tyler, Dallas, Houston, Birmingham, Albany, Mobile, Raleigh, Charleston, Charlotte, and Concord (NC). As we speak Robert (from Mondamin) is headed off to London, Paris and Madrid to show camp videos and recruit campers.

Liddell Shannon is doing some work at camp this fall/winter and is living at Delebar’s with me (Frances). She is headed out to New Zealand in March and would love any tips from those of you who have spent some time there…

Gus and Mills (camp dogs) are doing well although they really miss having you all around in the summer.

Happy Holidays!
Frances
