Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year!
I am just about to head out for the holidays but wanted to put
up a newsletter and wish you all Happy Holidays before I headed
out. The weather has definitely gotten colder and we are expecting
a snow storm in the next week! Despite the cold, Liddell and I
continue to brave the Back 40 from time to time. I have even been
spotted on horseback! The Back 40 looks very different this time
of year but still as beautiful. Instead of being the green tunnels
of trails we are used to in the summer, you can see forever! You
can hike all the way up to Tree Tent and look way down and see
the barn! Check out these pics Liddell took of Icicle Falls!
We are still doing some traveling and after the
new year will visit Atlanta, Athens, Washington DC, Richmond, Baltimore,
and many others. I’ll be sure to keep you posted… Robert
just returned from his European adventure. You can check out the Mondamin
Newsletter to find out more about his trip and see some pics.
We are working on the first ever Green Cove DVD! Mondamin’s
has just been completed and is “at the press.” Some
of you may have brothers that get a Mondamin DVD. Don't worry...we
are working on one for Green Cove. I will keep you updated on the
status...
Since our first newsletter we have heard from a few of you and
gotten some wonderful Christmas cards. GC Staff Alum Lee Knight
Caffery has been doing an externship for law school in Asheville
this semester and it has been great to have her around. Anne Starling
came to visit Lee Knight a week or so ago and it was wonderful to
see her. She is now a police officer in Florida and has been putting
her Counselor Hunt skills to good use. She and Lee Knight attended
a gingerbread house party at Dixie Marree Prickett’s house
in Asheville. Liddell, Megan Worley and I had dinner together a
week or so ago and Jill Carr, the barn manager, has been working
hard in her studio. She has been able to get a piece or two into
some shops in downtown Asheville…Go Jill! Maggie Hicks is
headed out for Botswana for several months in January…keep
us updated Maggie. If you’ve had any adventures or trips you’d
like to tell us about or any other news about people from camp email
us and we’ll try to get it into the next round of web news.
You can send us pictures too if you want. The more news and photos
we get from you the better.
A
tremendous adventure that a large group of current and former Mondamin
counselors are taking actually began yesterday. “The Grand
Canyon Initiative” is a great group of guys who are taking
an incredible 227-mile trip down the Colorado River through the
Grand Canyon. They are doing it not just for the thrill of the experience,
but to raise money for the camp scholarship fund. The money they
raise will go to help kids come to Mondamin or Green Cove this summer
who couldn’t afford it otherwise. If you’d like to learn
more about these guys’ trip and see tons of great photos,
go to their website: www.grandcanyoninitiative.org.
Better yet, think about making a donation to their fundraising so
you can help someone else go to camp next summer. Every little bit
counts – maybe a few dollars from your allowance or ask your
parents to give you one less present this year and donate that money
instead? That desire to help others is part of what we hope you
learned at camp and what this time of year is all about. Go to their website to find out how to give money.
We would love to know how you are and what you are up to so send
us an email! Have a wonderful and safe holiday season!
