Happy February! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner we hope that everyone’s New Year is off to a great start. All kinds of fun news has come in over the last few weeks and we wanted to make sure and get the good news your way! As for life in Tuxedo, things are going well. Main Camp is just a few campers from full and June Camp is coming along quickly. We are also starting to get some Early June and August Camp campers signed up. So, if you want to be at Green Cove this summer and haven't let us know yet please do!

NEWS

Andrew and Sarah Bell moved to Tuxedo with the New Year. Andrew, who has most recently been back to work on the Main Camp paddling staff, has joined the year-round Mondamin and Green Cove team. Andrew and his new bride, Sarah, arrived at camp a few weeks ago; he will be helping with everything which normally goes on at camp, and especially will be developing some fall and spring programming. Among other things, there will probably be more off season paddling options for you kayakers and canoeists, as well as other programs available for groups. Sarah is currently working hard on getting their new home ready for a baby! We hope she will come hang out with the girls at Green Cove some this summer.

The annual Mondamin and Green Cove holidays party in New Orleans was a big hit once again. Thanks to the Lapeyres for being such gracious hosts! Robert, Susan and Marie go home there each year and help host a party for all of the campers and staff in the area. As you can see from the photo, it was a big group! About 35 campers came as did several staff members. The party was also the world premiere of the Mondamin DVD!

We recently heard from Rachel Tilney, Green Cove sailing goddess for the last few summers, who has been traveling with her husband, Clint, who you may know as the Mondo head of sailing. They spent about a month among the welcoming people in Ghana, West Africa and traveling. Since they returned Rachel has been to Dubai, UAE - on the Gulf next to Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The picture is of Rachel and Clint in the Dominican Republic. Parker Brothers has just contacted Rachel about creating a new board game called “Where in the world is Rachel Tilney?”. Some of you may have heard of Rachel’s predecessor Carman Sandiago.

There have been several GC get togethers over the past few months. Shea D’Anna was kind enough to send us some pics of a group of camp folks who took a ski trip to Tahoe and Liddell Shannon sent me a pic of a Girls Weekend in Chattanooga. The folks in the picture are Wes Alexander, McCall Manning, Phil Reed, Jason Lentz, Britta Weisner, Shea D'Anna, Amy Jenkins and Alden Schell.

Liddell was kind enough to include a little write up the Girls Weekend. The GC folks there were Liddell Shannon, Nancy Wilson, Randi Williams, Elysia Verson, Britta Weisner, Kathryn Higgason, Dixon Stapleton, and Shea D'Anna. Take it for what it is, it goes like this:
“The throng of Green Cove girls descended upon Chattanooga like water off a duck’s back. They ate horsedoerves with Suzie Howick on Friday night like a bridge over troubled waters. They scattered themselves about Katherine Higgason’s luxurious house like snow white and the seven dwarfs. They slept much better than the princess and the pea. Upon awakening, they greeted the day in pajamas and they continued to get to know the day very well by watching four movies. (We loved Napoleon Dynamite.) Movie quoting abounded during dinner (we were out of our PJ’s by them, but just barely) and we all got up and went home like sensible people on Sunday. All except K. Higg. who lives there. And Harper and Samantha (2 dogs), they also live there. As a matter of fact, the fish (I don’t think they have names) remained as well. So, all sensible adult peeps excepting K. Higg (who is of course sensible) went home.”

Liddell has left the world of Camp Green Cove until May. She has just arrived in New Zealand (with her singing fireman hamster) and should be sending us some beautiful pics sometime soon. She is hoping to meet up with Katie Hawkins while she is down there. Katie sent us an email letting us know that she loves New Zealand! She has recently been on her first helicopter ride and is spending a good deal of time paddling on glacial rivers.

In other exciting news…Kim Stewart, who will be here for the summer, has recently gotten engaged. Kristen Chewning will be joining the ranks of the wed as well. Congrats to you both! Greer Putnam Haines and her husband, Andrew, will be bringing a future camper into the world at the end of the summer. Congrats to the Michiganites! Maggie Hicks is spending the semester in Zimbabwe teaching everything from social studies to agriculture. It sounds like she is doing a wonderful job and learning a lot…including what a real wildebeest looks like!

The Grand Canyon trip we told you about in the last newsletter was a huge success. Remember also that one of the reasons the guys did this trip was to raise money for the Camp Scholarship Fund. If you thought about giving a little money but forgot over the holidays, it’s not too late. Just visit the website they made for the trip: www.grandcanyoninitiative.org.

Morgan Scoville, who was one the head organizers, wrote us this short trip report and sent in a few photos...

“The trip was incredible! We totaled 11 Mondamin alums and covered 225 miles over the course of 21 days. Taylor Harris, Robert Mathews, Kiel Garella and Morgan Scoville all captained their own 2500lb, 18 foot Sotar rafts through some of the largest navigable whitewater in the Western Hemisphere. Everyday we were treated to soaring California Condors, perched Bald Eagles, and grazing Bucky Big Horn. Christmas and New Year’s days both found us attempting to hike to the rim. Although no one made it to the top, we enjoyed some of the most majestic and awesome scenery America has to offer. Hopefully all Mondamin and Green Cove alums will attempt to acquire a permit in the future because the Grand Canyon trip is a must for everyone.”

Many of you have recently received new Mondamin DVD! Yeah! We are working on Green Cove’s. For this year the DVD will have the current video on it and next year we are planning on having a whole new interactive DVD.

The other cool thing that we have just finished is the Virtual Tour we told you about in the last web newsletter. If you go to www.greencove.com (or www.mondamin.com) and click on the Virtual Tour button, you can check it out. Each place you click on comes with a small slide show with pictures from last summer. There is also a virtual tour of the places we take trips!
