Second Virtual Campfire

When Main Camp was supposed to be starting last week, it’s strange to sing Ashgrove in your living room instead of making your way down to the campfire circle isn’t it? Rather than lean on a friend’s shoulder, you’re seeing them on your computer screen. You miss the cool breeze on your face and the crackling of the fire.

We miss it too! But even in our sadness, we can’t help but feel joy in our opportunities to connect with the Green Cove community.

During our second virtual campfire….

Terry gave us a way to reframe some of our negative feelings during this difficult time.

Sarah shared a personal struggle that became a personal success, and gave us a creative challenge!

Alison told the story of her most memorable camp trip and what she learned from it (spoiler alert: always be prepared for bears!).

Gratitude. Inner strength. Making the most of what you are given.

These are the lessons our incredible staff talked to us about, and hopefully these are some skills you’ve learned during your time at Green Cove! Whether it’s your first summer or your 20th, we hope you take some time this week to reflect on these lessons, and the many others you’ve learned from camp.

Can you reach out to someone and express gratitude for their friendship? Or show gratitude for the things you have by doing something to help others? Can you find inner strength to work through a struggle, learn a new thing, or find a way to be creative? Can you flip a negative situation on its head- take charge and make it positive? Or smile and spread kindness, even when frustration is an easy option?

Even if things can’t be perfect this summer, we think we’ll all be a little closer to fine if we use the lessons learned at camp to help guide us.

Thank you to our incredible singers and musicians: Kim Alvare & family, Carolyn Groves, and Katie La Rue.

Thank you to the staff for sharing your thoughts and stories: Terry Millsaps, Sarah Bahn, and Alison Hafner.

And thank you to every camper, staff member, alumni, and camp friend who joined us. For those of you who couldn’t meet with us for the live event, please enjoy the recording below! (We kick things off with Ashgrove at 4:25 if you want to skip ahead!)

About Ev Schwartz

Our Assistant Director is Ev Schwartz, who moved to North Carolina and joined our full time staff in 2019. Originally from Alexandria, VA, Ev grew up going to camp in the mountains of Virginia. She graduated from Virginia Tech in 2016 with a BA in Political Science and a BA in Economics. After graduation, Ev was pursuing a Masters degree in Political Science when her love of outdoor education was rekindled. From there she worked for camps as a Head counselor, Head of outdoor living skills, and an outdoor learning center instructor. Ev is an avid believer in the potential of outdoor education to bring about positive camper outcomes, as well as the power of a small community of dedicated women to make a real difference in the world. In the summer she coordinates with activities to make sure programs run smoothly and trips are rewarding and safe. In Fall, winter, and spring, Ev travels to recruit campers and works hard to assemble the best staff team possible. Ev lives at camp with her dog Eddy and spends her free time hiking, climbing, caving, and doing just about anything to be outside!
