Throughout this past fall, reports have been flowing in confirming what many parents, teachers, and camp directors already intuitively knew — the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative effect on our youths’ mental health (Leeb, Bitsko, Radhakrishnan, Martinez, Njai, & Holland, 2020). During this time, mental health providers have documented increases in both anxiety and depression. All this angst and uncertainty is affecting young people differently than adults.
Summer 2021 ACA; Camp Is Exactly What Young People Need
Calla feels very lucky to have grown up at Green Cove and Mondamin. She is the daughter of Frank Bell and the niece of Green Cove Director Nancy Bell. Graduating from Oberlin College in 2003, Calla spent some time away from camp volunteering in West Africa, pursuing professional horse training, and then settling down and starting a family. Since she’s been back at Green Cove, her roles have included Line Head, Head of Riding, and Associate Director. Calla works full time for camp during the off season from her home in Charlottesville Virginia, with the help of a webcam straight into the Green Cove office! She is involved with everything to do with camp- from talking to parents and campers to hiring staff, and everything in between. Her husband, Nathan, and two boys, Tucker and Elliot, move down to North Carolina with her every summer for the camp season.
